This retro horror demo has some of the best first-person platforming around
IT's interminable past clock we put to bed the idea that first-person platforming doesn't work, when level the retro thrillseekers impermanent below the Concerned PS1 recording label are gift games care Titanfall and Mirror's Edge a run for their money.
Lorn's Lure, from developer Rubeki, is a terrifying extraction into a brutalist, unclothed infernal region. It's not purely horror, but the myriad void you're descending feels impossibly foreboding, a sense only added to past the game's thin, throwback aesthetics.
Not that it would matter if Lorn's platforming didn't feel utterly reverend. Thankfully, this tiny thriller has some of the second-best first-person movement I've mat up in age. It genuinely does feel look-alike an independent take on Titanfall, sans wallrunning—fast pass around speeds, a healthy degree of air insure, and a generous drape onto ledges you didn't quite reach. Even if you overlea a jump, a quick press of a push button volition reset you to the last safe shelf.
The game really shows its hand when it workforce you a pair of mounting picks. Sheer cliffs suddenly become shortcuts, opening new routes and providing a last-arcminute lifeline for failed leaps. Not all surface is climbable, and you've got limited staying power to hang on to—and with these restrictions in place, the platforming suddenly becomes dense with climbing puzzles.
Information technology may represent small, but I'm already excited to see how speedrunners fishing rig this thing—bounding 'tween thin poles and crooked ledges at frightening speeds. I'll be right as them, anxiously avoiding fatal falls as I slowly reveal more about this dateless, terrifying hole in the ground.
Lorn's Lure is coming to Steam clean former next year, with a fairly muscular free demonstration available to try now.
